Taiwan hospital fire incident: Fire blankets are becoming increasingly important

Taiwan hospital fire incident: Fire blankets are becoming increasingly important

A recent fire at Antai Tian-sheng Memorial Hospital in Donggang, Taiwan, tragically claimed nine lives amidst the chaos caused by Typhoon Krathon. The fire, believed to have started in a machine room on the second floor, spread quickly, filling the building with thick smoke. Due to the typhoon’s torrential rains and strong winds, firefighters faced immense challenges in containing the blaze and evacuating over 300 patients. Despite their efforts, some patients, particularly those with limited mobility, succumbed to smoke inhalation.

This incident underscores the growing importance of fire safety measures, such as fire blankets, in emergency settings like hospitals. These blankets can play a crucial role in containing small fires and providing immediate protection to individuals trapped in such dangerous situations

How to use a fire blanket to escape

Using a fire blanket to escape from a fire can be life-saving. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to properly use a fire blanket in an emergency:

Remove the Blanket from Its Packaging: Fire blankets are usually stored in a quick-release package. Pull the tabs or the handles to release the blanket from the container.

Protect Yourself: Hold the fire blanket by the corners or edges, ensuring your hands are protected behind the blanket. Most fire blankets have labels or a seam that helps you grip it properly.

Cover Yourself: If you need to escape through flames, cover your body with the fire blanket. Make sure the blanket covers as much of you as possible, particularly your head and upper body, which are most vulnerable to burns.

Move Quickly but Carefully: Once covered, move quickly but cautiously towards the exit. Keep the blanket close to your body and try to maintain it as a barrier between you and the flames.

Smother the Fire if Possible: If the fire is small, such as a cooking fire or a fire on clothing, you can use the fire blanket to smother the flames. Gently lay the blanket over the fire and leave it in place until the fire is completely out. Do not remove it prematurely, as this could allow the fire to reignite.

Call for Help: Even after using a fire blanket to smother flames or protect yourself, make sure to alert emergency services. If possible, get to safety first, then call for help.

Fire blankets are a valuable tool for immediate protection, but they are most effective when used in the early stages of a fire. For more severe fires, it is critical to evacuate as quickly as possible and let firefighters handle the situation
