Fire Prevention for EV, Lithium Battery, and Charging Stations

🔥 Fire Prevention & Response Measures for EVs, Lithium Batteries & Charging Stations

1. Electric Vehicle Fire Risks Overview

  • Thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries
  • Overheating during fast charging
  • Physical damage to battery packs after collision
  • Faulty or aged battery modules

2. Fire Prevention Measures

A. For Electric Vehicles (EVs)

  • Use certified Battery Management Systems (BMS) to monitor voltage, temperature, and cell balance.
  • Install automatic disconnects in the event of voltage spikes or accidents.
  • Avoid exposing vehicles to high temperatures or physical impact.
  • Schedule regular maintenance for wiring, insulation, and connectors.

B. For Lithium Battery Packs

  • Store batteries in fireproof containers.
  • Avoid overcharging or deep discharging.
  • Implement charging time limits and cooling periods for large packs.
  • Immediately isolate any damaged or bloated battery cells.

C. For Charging Stations

  • Equip with thermal sensors and smoke detectors.
  • Use circuit protection devices properly rated for the load.
  • Ensure ventilation to prevent heat buildup.
  • Only allow certified EV charging equipment.
  • Keep EV fire blankets or Class D fire extinguishers nearby.

3. Fire Response Tools & Measures

🚗 EV Fire Blanket

  • Used to isolate and suppress vehicle or battery fires.
  • Suitable for parking areas, charging stations, ferries, tunnels.
  • Typical size: 6m x 8m, made of high-silica fiberglass (up to 1600°C).
  • No powder mess, reusable, fast to deploy.

🔋 Battery Fire Response

  • Do not use water unless advised by professionals.
  • Use Class D extinguishers or fire containment blankets.
  • Focus on cooling surroundings and preventing fire spread.

⚠️ Evacuation & Emergency Protocol

  • Evacuate all people and establish a safety perimeter.
  • Call local fire services experienced with EV fires.
  • If safe, disconnect power sources and isolate the area.

4. Recommended Equipment

Product Purpose Notes
EV Fire Blanket Suppress vehicle fires EN13501-1 / NFPA 701 certified
Fireproof Battery Bag Contain battery explosion/fire For transport & storage
Class D Extinguisher Metal and lithium fires Place near EV charging points
Thermal Camera Monitor battery temperature For station operators & inspectors

5. Training & Awareness

  • Train staff on how to use EV fire blankets and extinguishers.
  • Display instruction signage near EV chargers.
  • Conduct regular fire drills in EV-equipped facilities.
